Dad and I both woke up at 6am this morning because we're still stuck on Ottawa time, so we had a quick continental breakfast in the motel's makeshift eatery, then made our way to the ghost town of Calico, arriving just as the gates were opening. It was awesome. The place looked right out of a Sergio Leone western, and was completely void of tourists so we had first pickings at all the attractions. They included the Mystery Shack - a place akin to the famous Mystery Spot featured on the Jim Rose Twisted Tour, where you seem to be constantly leaning at a ridiculous, impossible-looking angle - and the Maggie Mine - a silver ore mine that is famous for, no word of a lie, its "Glory Hole". I shot a good half an hour of b-roll Nevada scenery footage for my western, and it all looks gorgeous.
After cavorting around Calico for a couple of hours, we hopped back in our car and made the rest of the trek to Los Angeles, stopping at the Getty Center before finally reaching our destination. The Getty Center, for those of you who don't know, is an enormous, ornate and avant-garde art gallery that sits on the summit of a mountain overlooking everything from the LA freeway (famous for it's traffic) to Long Beach to Pacific Palisades to the ocean. The grounds were beautiful, with winding walkways, gurgling fountains and plants of every size, shape and colour. The gallery houses thousands and thousands of paintings, and more than a few sculptures, including works by such big names as Degas and Rembrandt. Dad and I spent a good three hours there, and saw maybe 10% of the sights. I'll go back someday, I'm sure.
And now here I am, sipping gin and tonic poolside in Tom Berry (producer)'s house in the pretty little LA suburb of..."Holy Wood". Am I spelling that correctly? Dad was just treated to a sneak preview of the first cut of "Decoys 2", and Tom had him review each of the boob shots to see which was the best. I only wish I made up that last sentence. The house (which I call a mansion - it has six bedrooms, a pool, a hot tub, a steam bath and a partridge in a pear tree) is delightfully decadent, and I look forward to spending the next day here before we head back to Las Vegas for Penn and Teller on saturday. Don't let Penn know, but Matrix challenged me to zap him with a shocking pen when I get his autograph.
Alright, my glass has been emptied, and I can smell meat grilling on the barbecue, so I had better go. But don't worry, I'll keep posting as my trip continues. Like you'd worry, anyway. To think, I'm only on the second day of my trip, and already I'm having more fun than can fit on a bun. Hope I didn't leave anything out.
